DURATION

10 weeks

Every shipment that moved through Atlas Freight arrived wrapped in paper: bills of lading, customs forms, invoices, each in a slightly different layout from a slightly different partner. Somewhere in the building, people were reading those documents and typing what they said into a system, forty thousand times a month. It worked, in the sense that things kept moving, but it was slow, expensive, and quietly error-prone in a business where one mistyped figure becomes a customs problem three countries away. The off-the-shelf OCR tools Atlas had tried could read a clean form; they fell apart on the messy, real-world variety that made up most of the pile. What Atlas needed wasn't scanning; it was understanding.

01

The challenge

Bills of lading, customs forms, and invoices arrived as PDFs and scans in a dozen formats, and analysts keyed them in by hand. The manual step capped how fast Atlas could grow and introduced errors that surfaced expensively, days downstream.

02

What we built

An extraction system that reads any document format, validates against their existing records, and exposes the structured data through an API their tools already speak to.

  • Format-agnostic extraction across every document type.

  • Validation against existing records to catch errors on the spot.

  • Structured output delivered straight into current tooling via API.

  • A confidence-scored exceptions queue for the handful that need eyes.
